Disney Lorcana World Championship introduces two new competitive game formats

Ravensburger has announced two new game formats for the Disney Lorcana World Championship coming up in June 2025.

The first day of the World Championship will feature a new Super Sealed format. At a glance, players familiar with Disney Lorcana’s Pack Rush format will recognise some similarities, though Super Sealed introduces additional strategic elements. Participants must construct their decks using booster packs from four distinct expansions, significantly widening the card pool and strategic possibilities available to them.

An intriguing addition to this format is the introduction of a sideboard, marking the first official use of such a mechanic in Disney Lorcana tournament play.

Following a Swiss-style, best-of-three tournament structure, players can exchange cards between their constructed deck and the remainder of their booster packs between matches. However, each new match requires players to return to their originally submitted deck list, maintaining consistency across the competition. Enthusiasm surrounds how cards such as Dual Ink types might perform, given their likely increased availability and flexibility within this format.

Triple Deck Constructed demands strategic depth and mental endurance

Arguably the most complex format Ravensburger has created for Disney Lorcana, Triple Deck Constructed requires players to arrive prepared with three distinct Core Constructed decks. Crucially, each deck must utilise unique ink colours without duplication. According to Ravensburger, the goal behind this decision is to challenge competitors to display true mastery and versatility beyond their preferred deck-building choices.

Adding an extra strategic dimension, players will have the chance during Swiss rounds to tactically ‘bench’ or effectively ban one of their opponent’s three decks. This new mechanic allows players to deny their opponents a deck choice based on their reputation or strategic assessment, significantly altering the tactical landscape.

Notably, for the grand finals, the banning mechanism is removed, compensated by changing the match format from a best-of-three to a demanding best-of-five series. The extended series tests not only the participants’ knowledge of the extensive card pool but also their mental endurance and stamina, potentially proving taxing even for the most seasoned players.

Implications and challenges for the future of Disney Lorcana

The introduction of Super Sealed and Triple Deck Constructed formats signals Ravensburger’s commitment to innovation and the long-term vitality of Disney Lorcana. Nevertheless, these ambitious formats raise practical concerns, particularly regarding their implementation at a local game-store level.

Super Sealed, for instance, is highly resource-intensive, requiring stores to supply multiple booster packs across several expansions for each participant. This could present considerable logistical challenges without substantial backing from either Ravensburger or community involvement.

Similarly, Triple Deck Constructed asks players for significant investments, not just in product but also in time and energy. Whether these formats gain traction outside of flagship events may depend on Ravensburger’s promotional efforts and ongoing community support.

A positive outlook for the game’s longevity

While the future of these formats beyond the World Championship is currently uncertain, their introduction is a strong indication of Ravensburger’s dedication to maintaining player interest and keeping Disney Lorcana fresh. This proactive approach promises a bright future, with Ravensburger clearly signalling their intent to nurture and grow the game for years to come.
