Police in New York are searching for a man who stole nearly $10,000 worth of baseball and Pokémon trading cards from CardVault by Tom Brady in Manhattan’s SoHo district.
The incident happened late morning on the 20th October, when the suspect tried to buy cards with a credit card that was declined, then manually overrode the contactless terminal before leaving the store with around $9,710 in merchandise.
According to the NYPD, the man initiated a card purchase that failed, then entered manual prompts into the reader to bypass the decline without the staff member’s knowledge. He walked out with a stash of cards before the issue was detected.
The store is part of the CardVault chain co-owned by seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady. The New York store opened only two weeks before the theft occurred, and is the seventh US CardVault location to be opened.
CCTV images released by police show a man wearing a black New York Yankees cap and black clothing, with white socks and trainers, carrying a multicoloured bag. Anyone with information has been asked to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers.
